Bishop Celebrates Mass on December 18
Bishop Michael McGovern celebrated Mass at St. Joseph Church on Saturday, December 18. In his homily, the Bishop encouraged everyone to have an "open" sign on their hearts to welcome Jesus on Christmas and every day of their lives. A memorial chalice was also presented by the 4th Degree Honor Guard of the Knights of Columbus Blessed Virgin Assembly. This chalice honors deceased KC 4th Degree members Paul Rogers and George Karoski. Following the Mass, a reception was held in the Parish Center. We extend our appreciation to everyone who helped with the preparations.

Special Collection for Mayfield, Kentucky
Monetary donations are being accepted for the tornado victims in Mayfield, Kentucky. For the next two weeks, through Dec. 26, baskets are located at each church entrance for contributions. If you wish to write a check, please make it payable to St. Joseph Church. Betty Batts, one of our own parishioners, will deliver the donations to Mayfield, where her family resides. Your support is appreciated as we assist our brothers and sisters in Christ.

St. Joseph Parishioner Is a Raffle Winner

For the second year in a row, our parish had a winner in the Knights of Columbus Vocations Raffle. Pattie Richard was a $500 prize winner. Last year, Wanda Wolf Pritchard had one of the winning tickets.
More than $278,000 was raised to support religious vocations throughout Illinois. Several KC dignitaries, including our own Bishop McGovern, were on hand to draw the winners at a state meeting in Bloomington-Normal on December 4.
Benton KC Council 9890 extends appreciation to all who supported this year's Vocations Raffle.  To see the complete statewide winner list, click HERE.

Pray for a Just Outcome on the Dobbs Case
On November 18, Christians throughout the U.S. including those in our own parish, gathered to pray for the Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization case. Church leaders from many faiths spoke on this historic case and offered prayers of hope. The Benton Knights of Columbus sponsored the online event.
This case concerns the constitutionality of Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. This case is the biggest challenge to Roe v. Wade in a generation. As Catholics, we are called to offer prayers for the attorneys presenting this case, for the justices who will decide it, and for our country which will be impacted by it.
You can listen to oral arguments on the Supreme Court's website or on C-Span's website.

Sock Drive

Socks are the most needed but least donated article of clothing for the homeless. The Benton Knights of Columbus Council 9890 is doing something about this! You can help warm the feet of our brothers and sisters in Christ by donating new or clean, gently-used socks. All sizes, all colors, all styles are needed, especially warm winter socks. The socks will be distributed through the Benton Food Pantry.
Collection boxes are at each church entrance.

October 17, 2021 --- On this beautiful Sunday afternoon, 25 parishioners gathered for a Rosary Rally to pray for the conversion of America. The rally was part of a nationwide effort of the America Needs Fatima organization. As human efforts fail to solve America's key problems, we turn to God, through His Holy Mother, asking for His urgent help.
We extend a special thank-you to Pattie Richard for organizing the Rally for our parish, and to Harry Orlandini, Sr. Laura Reynolds, and Fr. Urban Osuji for conducting the service.

Support Our Seminarians

As young men answer the call to the priesthood, we are called to support them. There are currently six seminarians in the Belleville Diocese and you can learn more about them HERE. Consider sending a note, a card, or even a box of cookies throughout the year!
